A human debt

Debt… to our parents, and their parents — our ancestors. We repay them by becoming ancestors.

David Graeber, “Debt”

Is that so?

If so, then when will it stop? When we, as conscious human beings, will make a decision that population growth cannot go on unchecked. We are already at the limits of what our planet can handle to support us. Of course — there are works and developments with alternative energy sources and sustainable agriculture and artificial meat substitutes and GMO foods. Even with all that going on, I just don’t see results or a chance that it will fundamentally change the current situation. And to be honest — I am sure if that is even my problem. I still enjoy my current lifestyle and I think I will be ok for the next 30–40 years I have left here. The issues will be faced by the future generations, by children and future descendants of people currently alive. I don’t have children (nor do I plan to have any) and can actually be very selfish and just enjoy my life while smirking at stupidity around me. At people that should know better, that should know that they are going full speed at the wall and their descendants will have to live in a hell they created.

Maybe I should just let it go. Since it will not affect me, why even bother? Let the future generations fight and kill themselves over all the diminishing resources, drinking water, and living space. That really will not be any different from the previous thousands of years. Only recently, the last 50–60 years were a time of unprecedented peace and safety and security and growing affluence and comfort of the middle class. And we fucked it all up for corporate and banking profits.

Unchecked population growth is also their fault and their own doing. More people = more potential customers = more profits. Let the current environment go to hell. Money is what counts for those fucking ghoulish bastards.

As for me, I hope I will live long enough to say loudly — “I told you so”! In the meantime, I will smirk and enjoy this spectacle of disaster and stupidity and selfishness and greed.
