Cliff Dwellers by George Bellows, c. 1913

Is it really different today from that scene from the early XX century? Ok, most people don’t live in tenement buildings now, but is living in apartments blocks and complexes really that different? There might more greenery, more trees, some playgrounds for children, a lot of more cars and A LOT more parking spaces in modern cities. But kids still run around, screaming and yelling and playing some complex games that at their age are a matter of live or death. Or even worse — a matter of temporary popularity and quick alliances and secret playground deals. Or at least a matter of triumphant screams or copious tears and sobbing. For adults — it is a little different now. Our lives no longer spill out of the buildings on the streets, on the fire escapes or stoops. There is time for quick glance and REALLY small talk with neighbors but not much more than that. We close our lives, our triumphs and failures, our secrets and desires and emotions and smiles and tears in four walls of homes. There might me a sudden scream, or something breaking or quickly raised voices. We prick our ears to that sudden change in the mundane. But then it becomes quiet again and we go back to the torpor of everyday lives, maybe intersected with just a bit of gossip about that small or big tragedy on the other side of our walls.

“for they knew what sort of noise it was; they recognize, by now, the footsteps of the Furies”. Enjoying life on the road to recovery. Observing and writing.
