If I hear anybody denying climate change, I will have some very strong words with that person. I was finishing some garden work today — raking leaves, pruning trees and shrubs, tidying up all over, when I noticed fresh buds on my magnolia tree. Looking closely, I also found new buds on a willow in my garden:
It is the second half of October and there shouldn’t be any new buds on any trees now! And no — it was not unseasonably warm recently. This October is like most of the recent Octobers — around 0 to 2 degrees at night, 10–12 degrees during the day. But looking deeper into the past, I know that there is a noticeable change in the overall climate. Of course — I nor anybody else will be able to notice those small, subtle changes in weather patterns from year to year. But minor changes that happen bit by bit over many years will make a difference in a local and global climate without people actually noticing it. I remember that 40 years ago, in north-east Poland, Octobers were already months with below zero temperatures expected during the day. From the start of November, snow was already in the forecast. Now — we are lucky if there is any snow by Christmas. Long-term weather reports show temperatures above freezing for at least the next 30 days. It is a new normal for many people, but I know that this is abnormal weather for this time of the year for this part of the world. What can I say — climate change deniers are wrong and stubbornly thick-headed people who don’t accept what is happening right in front of their eyes.
