Destiny

“We make our own history, but not under conditions of our own choosing”.
Very interesting quote, and very surprising in its simplicity. That sentiment seems obvious, but when put in those exact words, it becomes a powerful explanation of our conditions and struggles.
It is also very surprising who wrote it — it was Karl Marx. And also something else just became very surprising to me — I realized that I never read anything by Karl Marx. That might change soon.
What is surprising as well — is that if we don't get to choose the conditions which define our lives and subsequential choices, we might work to change those conditions for something better.
We don't need to endure predestination growing from our backgrounds, we might define and create new conditions of our own choosing. That seems obvious as well, and yet it seems strangely unfamiliar to me.
I don't think I ever made this conscious choice to change the underlying conditions of my life. I worked on creating my own history within the narrow scope of the expected definition of me.
It doesn't need to be this way. Making my own way in the world is just an afterthought. If I dare to change my surrounding conditions, then my history will no longer be history, but my future.
A destiny of my own making. Without limits and holds and down weight. There might be failures in this as well — of course, there will be failures, but they will be my failures and stepping-stones for something better.
Do I dare?
