Eternal or immortal?

At first glance, both words (both ideas) mean the same. But let's look at this closely. For example, let's take our soul, and let's assume that it is not a controversial idea that the soul even exists, but let's take for granted that every human has one. So, is the soul eternal or immortal? If the soul is eternal, that brings a disturbing conundrum — is there a storage place for souls that were created at the moment of the initial creation of the world? A place where souls stay in limbo waiting for the opportunity to be joined with a corporal body? If that is the case, then after the bodily vessel breaks, those souls will have to go back to limbo again and wait. That seems like a waste, and what exactly would they wait for? Is it prudent to even begin to think about reincarnation to make any sense of that theory? As to souls being immortal — that would solve the issue of the initial creation. The soul would begin with the start of a physical body, starting its existence by nesting among the first cells. But then again, after the end of life of that particular body (life in those dimensions we can know), the soul will have to go into limbo as well, awaiting something, someday. And that is less of a waste, but unnecessary cruel — to go from the experience of a full life to the void of time and space that might last a while.
