December 26th

Now Tom said, “Mom, wherever there’s a cop beating a guy
Wherever a hungry newborn baby cries
Where there’s a fight against the blood and hatred in the air
Look for me, Mom, I’ll be there
Wherever somebody’s fighting for a place to stand
Or a decent job or a helping hand
Wherever somebody’s struggling to be free
Look in their eyes, Ma, and you’ll see me”

I don’t think that there is a way to win a fight against inequality and oppression — but no matter, I will not give it up. I will continue from my side to point and rant and shame and vote against those who perpetrate inequality and subjugation of those most vulnerable ones. What I also will do is to help those who need help the most — in any way I can. Be it by donating to charities, volunteering, or simply just having or finding time to talk with those who simply need to talk. Be it by demonstration, picketing, and boycotting against the casual cruelty of faceless political and economic and religious, and social powers. Be it by any means that let me, in the end, look at my face in the mirror and see a conscious human being there who did what he was supposed to do to alleviate the suffering and misery of other people.

The sense of anger against inequality is one of my earliest, constant and well-defined values. And as I grow older, it’s only growing in strength. I feel becoming more radical with age — as I am becoming more and more comfortable myself. I know that might seem hypocritical, but in reality, it is not — what I have; I want to and do share it with others. And I don’t see the reason — if I am well comfortable in my life — why other people cannot be the same way as well? Especially those excluded by age or financial or employment status, those maltreated because of their ethnic background, gender, or religion. Or those exploited because of their cognitive capacity or mental or physical health or lack of education. That goes especially for children who will not have equal opportunities in life because of the schools they go to and the education they get from the earliest age.

Does it make a socialist, wanting all that? I know that for many people, that is a dirty word and an insult to end any possibility of debate and mutual understanding. If so, so be it — I don’t care about labels and memes and misconceptions thrown around the internet on social mediums. I don’t want other people to suffer. I want everybody to have equal opportunities to start and lead their lives. I want every single person to have access to basic commodities and rights for humans: food, water, medicine, freedom of movement and association (political and religious), unbiased information and self-determination and unshackled from fear and violence.

Is it really too much? Am I an idealist? It is possible, but I don’t want to be any other way. That is how I want to be.
