Old-school charm
February 20th, 2023
I love it. This cheesy old-school soft sci-fi pseudo-fantasy genre of literature. It is easy and pleasant and not taxing-on-brain reading. These books are and feel dated, and might be a little out of current woke expectations and requirements of any kind of literature but I still love them and use them to feel better without demanding too much from my mind.
They are still pretty good reads of course. I wouldn't be reading pointless drivel that fills so many pages available for anyone interested. There is usually a good story, some unexpected twists, and a narrative that forces me to keep going page after page to know how it will end. And that book has it all, including some random violence that doesn't really fit the flow of the story but that makes it so much more unpredictable and arresting.
Those books are my safe place, my safe refuge where I know I can go and lose myself in the fantasy of world-building by an author. I don't need to think too much about what I read or re-read sentences or pages to get an idea of what the author meant. I just go with the flow of the story and let myself enjoy it — without any high expectations, except for expected fun. And for the hundreds of those books I already read (mostly very forgettable books), there are hundreds more just waiting for my mood to need a trusted pick-me-up. And that never fails.
