The chains

March 7th

Prison Interior by Francisco Goya

We are all prisoners of our minds and habits and ingrained behaviors. All that stays chained to what and how we do everything every day. Even when there is light, we at best only can move closer to it to bask in its delicate caressing warmth and go no further. Our chains are too short. And we stay there, telling ourselves that it is fine, that today we are just going to enjoy the warmth. But tomorrow! Tomorrow will be the day that we will finally break out of our chains and run free to the light and freedom!

Bullshit.

It is a lie, and we know it as a lie as soon as this thought enters our minds. We will not do such a thing! We will stay chained here to the narrow scope and prejudices of our minds. Because it is something we know. Something comfortable and safe. Dirty and oppressive, but ours and familiar. There is plenty of time to make fantastic plans and resolutions. And then pushed them back to the dark recesses of our minds.

So we spend our days and weeks and months and years just looking at the light, with freedom only a theoretical concept. Sometimes we think that we were able to experience it already without leaving our confining prison, but it is not true. It was just a ray of sunshine that touched our skin for a moment and disappeared as the sun continued its daily toil. So we stay in the same place, hoping to be blessed with a touch of light the next day.

Pathetic.
