Marc Chagall — The House with the Green Eye, 1944

It doesn't matter what they are called now — they were called Lares or Domovoy in the past, and now — whatever else their names are in different languages. Each proper home has them. They watch the good and the bad things happen, they look over generations of newborns and numbers of those who passed away. They keep an eye on the safety and prosperity of the family hearth and the individual people who live there. They can be driven away — by strife and anger and violence within the family, so there are plenty of homes without anyone there watching for those who live there. And it shows… The smallest and the most dilapidated home in the world which has those spirits watching over is better, warmer and safer than any mansion without them. I have a place like that myself. I don't live there currently, but I visit this place every other day. I know that one day this house will be empty and I will go and live there permanently myself, and I know I will be welcomed there by them. And I will be watched over by them, and will pamper them with small offerings here and there. That is how it is supposed to be.

“for they knew what sort of noise it was; they recognize, by now, the footsteps of the Furies”. Enjoying life on the road to recovery. Observing and writing.
