What a beautiful disaster
December 30th, 2022
Do you know what it is in the photo above? It is lush green grass. In winter. In the last days of December. In north-east Poland. And it is not just a single patch of grass, it is like that everywhere I look. Over the last couple of days, I traveled close to 800 kilometers, and the green grass stands out everywhere here — in the cities and in the countryside.
And that is not normal.
It is not normal for the grass to be green in winter, even after a several wet and warm days. It is a proof of profound change in the nature of our environment.
As I was traveling, I heard comments from random people on the train as we were going through what was supposed to be the winter desolation of plowed fields and bare forests— “look at that!”, “how green it is”, “that is so unusual”, “that is just wrong”. So it is not only me who noticed it and is disturbed by it. And the question is what (if anything) can be done with it?
And the answer for me, unfortunately, is — NOTHING. Nothing can be done anymore. And the main reason is global apathy and ignorance and indifference. I wouldn't expect anything else from governments and businesses and global corporations and grifters everywhere, latching onto an easy profit bandwagon. But the same from us — the people?
There is a disaster upcoming, on a scale that is simply unimaginable. And we are sleepwalking right into it. The late-stage capitalism and unchecked globalization with the only goal being maximizing the shareholders profits is already beyond any ways of sustainability. There is very little hope and positivity and it happening right before our eyes. We are not blind, just stubbornly unwilling to see and face the truth.
