You won’t believe what happened when I stopped reading the news this year!
January 25th, 2025
Nothing. Nothing happened. Literally nothing. The world didn't end, or if it did then the simulation kicked in seamlessly. Now, that you have an answer to the clickbait title, you can stop reading. Or you might continue. No matter anyway — this is a post about nothing.
I stopped reading the news not on the 1st of January, but on the 3rd. I don't believe in some kind of particular date for starting something. You just do it or not, so on the 3rd of January, I just stopped reading the news on the internet. That was something that I thought about for a while, but I was afraid. Afraid mostly of losing a particular habit I formed over the last decades. I don't watch TV, well — I don't even own the TV set. Yes, I am one of those guys. I was getting my news from a variety of sources on the internet and that was enough. That was something I did in the morning over breakfast, kept scrolling and reading during breaks at work, and continued in the evening back at home. I was extremely well-informed. I was getting my news from an extremely curated set of sources and that made me feel good about myself. I could talk on any subject and issue locally or worldwide with ease and in-depth. That was usually met with polite nodding and a quick “Well, anyway…”. I kept at it anyways.
And I was getting more and more angry. And I don't want to be angry. I decided that I would try ignorance, especially since it seemed to work well for so many people, and as I said in the beginning — nothing happened. Nothing changed. I still am the same person going about my things this same way. The world keeps on spinning, things keep happening but I am no longer aware of that. Of all that shit. Nothing that happens nationwide or in the world affects me personally. It might, or it might not. No matter that — if it does there is nothing I can do about it but to adjust myself to it. I am going to continue my ignorance for a longer while, but I don't expect any changes. I will participate in my civic duty and vote in all upcoming elections the same way I’ve done before — by choosing the lesser of two evils. I don't need to know any particular news about what is happening to do that.
